How to Choose a Wedding Color Palette That Feels Like You

One of the first questions couples face when planning a wedding is: “What are our colors going to be?”
It sounds simple—but when you start scrolling Pinterest or trying to match swatches, it can get overwhelming fast.

There’s a ton of pressure to choose the “right” palette, and it’s easy to fall into the trap of picking whatever’s trending. But your wedding color palette should be more than what looks good on Instagram—it should feel like you.

Here’s how to choose a wedding color palette that’s personal, meaningful, and totally you.

1. Start With the Vibe—Not the Trend

Before you start pinning hex codes or obsessing over shades of mauve, ask yourself this:

What do you want your wedding to feel like?

Is it romantic and ethereal, with soft pastels and floaty textures?
Bold and modern with high contrast?
Warm and rustic, like a sunset in the Midwest?

Instead of chasing a trend, focus on the atmosphere. That will naturally lead you to colors that support the story you want to tell.

2. Look Inward Before You Look Online

A color palette should come from your story—not someone else’s highlight reel.

Think about:

  • What colors do you love wearing?

  • What’s the vibe of your home or shared space?

  • Are there any colors tied to meaningful memories—like a favorite vacation, a family heirloom, or even your favorite flowers?

This is where wedding planning gets personal. The goal is to reflect you, not just recreate a mood board. If it doesn’t feel like you, what’s the point?

3. Consider the Season (But Don’t Be Ruled By It)

Yes, certain colors tend to show up in certain seasons—like burgundy in fall or blush in spring. But there are so many ways to make colors feel seasonally appropriate without boxing yourself in.

Want to use soft pinks in the winter? Add texture and deeper tones for warmth. Love orange in spring? Pair it with sherbet or peachy tones to make it feel light and fresh.

The key is being intentional—and working with vendors (like your florist 🙋‍♀️) who can help bring that vision to life in a thoughtful way.

4. Let Your Florals Help Build the Palette

This is one of the biggest wedding color mistakes I see: picking an entire palette before considering the florals.

Your flowers are going to be one of the biggest visual elements in your day—and the right blooms can completely shape the look and feel of your wedding.

I always encourage couples to keep an open mind when it comes to floral color. Some flowers just don’t come in certain shades (I’m looking at you, true blue!). But what we can do is build a palette that plays to the strengths of what’s in season, what’s available, and what gives your wedding that personal, curated feel.

5. Focus on Feelings, Not Just Hex Codes

Color is emotional. It can feel cozy, bold, whimsical, dreamy, or dramatic.

So instead of stressing about whether your shades are an exact match, ask yourself:

  • What colors make you feel happy?

  • What combinations remind you of home, comfort, or celebration?

  • What shades make you light up?

When in doubt, trust your gut. You don’t need a Pantone-certified plan—just a palette that speaks to you.

TL;DR? Here’s the Color Palette Cheat Sheet:

  • Choose your vibe first—romantic, modern, vintage, etc.

  • Pull inspo from your life, not just social media

  • Let the season inspire, not control, your colors

  • Work with your florist to build a palette that’s floral-friendly and gorgeous IRL

  • Go with colors that make you feel something—not just ones that match
